router Wi-Fi channel ssid mode
This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D7230-4 router.

On this page, the first thing that you can change is the Wireless Channel. In the United States their are 11 different channels you can use. Of these channels there is only room for up to three channels that don't overlap. Channel 1,6, or 11. Everyone should use one of these three channels because overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. Sharing a channel however does not, due to channel sharing software within the router. For a good explanation of this, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

Next is the SSID. This is the name you give your wireless network that identifies yours from the others around. This name should not contain anything that may point to you such as names, phone numbers, or addresses. For more information on this topic, check out our guide titled Wireless names.

The other thing you might want to change is the Broadcast SSID. If you want to hide your wireless name, uncheck this box. This basically hides your wireless name from any wireless devices that are in the area. This does not mean you are invisible, someone who wants to hack your network can find it with the right programs. This camouflages your network name, it does not make it invisible.

Lastly, click the blue Apply Changes button. Then, on the left side of the page, click Security.

This is the wifi security page from your Belkin F5D7230-4 router.

On this page you are able to change the security you use for your network. In the box labeled Security Mode, use the drop down list to choose WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK). This is the best choice for the security of your network. Please read our guide titled WEP vs. WPA for more explanation on this topic.

Below this should be the Authentication. The best option here is WPA2-PSK.

If asked what type of Encryption Technique you want to use, choose AES. AES is much stronger than TKIP. TKIP has some flaws that make it very vulnerable to attack.

Finally you should be asked what your Password(PSK) is. This is the password of your network. Use this space to enter a strong password that you will use to access your network . This password should be at least 20 characters long. For a password, the longer the better. Avoid using any personal information here. You should also avoid using any words that can be found in a dictionary. We do recommend using symbols, numbers, and capital letters. For help in creating a strong password that is memorable, check out our guide titled Choosing a strong password.

Click the Apply Changes button when you are finished. That's it, your wireless is now more secure.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
