In this guide we will talk about how to reset the Belkin F5D7230-4v8 router back to it's original factory defaults. There is a lot of confusion between the terms reset and reboot. Rebooting a router is cycling it's power usually done by turning it off and back on again. Resetting is taking all the settings and returning them to how they were from the factory.

Warning: Resetting the router can cause problems if you don't know what to expect. We suggest creating a list of items you know will be returned to default. We have started that list for you below.

  • The router's username and password.
  • The WiFi SSID, password, and security method.
  • The ISP username and password if you own a DSL router.
  • Any other settings that you have changed such as port forwards, or the channel number.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:

  • Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
  • Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
  • Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
  • Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
  • Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.

This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.

Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.

NordVPN is the fastest VPN!

Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

The first thing to do when you want to do a factory reset is to locate the tiny reset button. This is normally found on the bottom of the router or on the back panel. We have found it's location for you and circled it in red for you. See the image below.

Now take the end of an unwound paperclip to press and hold the reset button for a minimum of 10 seconds. If you hold down the reset button for only a second or two it will normally just reboot the router. Your router also needs to be on for this to work.

Don't forger that this erases every setting you have ever changed in order to personalize this router. Try other ways of fixing the problem before you resort to a factory reset.

Login to the Belkin F5D7230-4

Now that the reset is complete you need to login using the default IP address, username, and password. We have found this information for you and placed it in our Login Guide for the Belkin F5D7230-4v8 router.

Change Your Password

Next you should change that default password to something you create. It's never a good idea to leave a password as it's default. We recommend taking a look at the Choosing a Strong Password guide for helpful tips and ideas.

Tip: Write this new password down somewhere safe. If your router is in a secure location it's okay to attach the password to the bottom of the router for safe keeping.

Setup WiFi on the Belkin F5D7230-4v8

The last setting we will discuss in this guide is the WiFi settings. This includes the SSID, password, and security method. These need your attention as soon as possible. Some router companies like to leave the security open as the default. This literally means the security is open to anyone who wishes to use it and your info isn't encrypted. Change this immediately to WPA2-PSK. For steps on how to do this check out our How to Setup WiFi on the Belkin F5D7230-4v8 guide.
