router Wi-Fi channel ssid mode
This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D9231-4 router.

On this page, the first thing you need to check is the Wireless Channel. You need to be on channel 1,6, or 11. There are up to 14 channels that you can choose from, 11 more commonly. Of these channels there is only room in the spectrum for up to three channels that don't overlap. Overlapping channels cause interference. But, sharing a channel completely does not. You need to be using channel 1,6, or 11, so there is no overlap. For more information on this topic, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

The other setting that needs to be changed is the SSID. This is the name you give your network. This wireless name should not contain any personal information. If you want more on this topic, check out our guide titled Wireless names.

Click the Apply Changes button when you are finished. Then, on the left side of the page, click the link titled Security.

router security
This is the security page from your Belkin F5D9231-4 router.

On this new page, the first thing you need to change is the Security Mode. There are several different choices here, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA. We suggest using the choice of WPA-PSK(no server).

Next is the Authentication. We recommend the choice of WPA2-PSK. This is considered the strongest choice with the technology available today.

Below that is the Encryption Technique. There are two choices here, TKIP and AES. TKIP is older and not as secure as AES. We recommend using the option of AES. Right now AES is considered uncrackable.

The last thing you must change is the Password (PSK). This password is the one you use to access your network. It is also used in the encryption technique. You need to create a strong password that can't easily be cracked by a program or by guessing. Create a password of at least 20 characters. Avoid using personal information as this can easily be guessed. Avoid using any real words that can be found in a dictionary as these can be cracked by programs very quickly. This password should look random with some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. We have created a guide that can help you come up with a strong password that is memorable, Choosing a strong password.

Finally, click the Apply Changes button and you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
