The SSID should be changed from it's default value. The SSID is the name you give your network so you can identify it. We don't recommend using any personal information here. Read our guide titled Wireless Names for more information.

Now you need to check your Channel. The wireless channel should should be set to 1,6, or 11. To learn why these three channels are important, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Choose WPA2 from the Security drop down menu. This is the most secure option available. To learn more about this topic, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

Set the Cipher Type to AES for the strongest encryption.

PSK/EAP should be set to PSK.

Now, enter the Passphrase. This is the password you plan on using to gain access to your network. We recommend making this password strong, 14-20 characters long. The longer the password, the stronger it becomes. Use a variety of symbols, numbers, and letters. Don't use words, or at least misspell them. Don't use any personal information. To create a strong and memorable password, read our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

Enter that password one more time in the box reading Confirmed Passphrase.

That's all there is to it, simply click the green Apply button in the lower right corner of the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
