You are now on the correct page to make the necessary adjustments to your WiFi.

  1. You need to change the SSID from the default one you were given by D-link. To learn more about the SSID, read our Wireless Names Guide. Basically the SSID is the name you give your network so that you can identify it later on. Don't use personal information unless you want all your neighbors to know which one is yours.
  2. Next is the Channel. Be sure you are using channel 1,6, or 11. To learn why you should only be using these three channels, read our guide titled WiFi Channels.
  3. After that is the Authentication. We recommend using WPA-PSK. To get an even better security option, update your firmware to allow for WPA2-PSK. To learn about the different security modes, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.
  4. Now enter the Passphrase. This is the password you use to access your wireless network. We recommend around 20 characters. Do not use personal information. Do use symbols, and numbers in the password. To learn about how to create a memorable and strong password, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
  5. Enter the password one more time in the box labeled Confirmed Passphrase.
  6. Click the Apply and you are done.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
