  • The Wireless Network Name is the name you create to identify your wireless network. Be creative but avoid using personal information. To learn more about this topic, read our guide titled Wireless Names.
  • The Wireless Channel. This can be changed by unchecking the box labeled Enable Auto Wireless Channel Scan. Then choose the channel you want to use from the Wireless Channel drop down menu. Make sure to use channel 1,6, or 11 only. To learn why, read our WiFi Channels Guide.
  • In the Security Mode list, choose WPA-Personal. If you want to know more about the different security options, read our guide by clicking this link.
  • Narrow down your WPA choice even more by choosing the option of WPA2 Only. This is considered the most secure option.
  • The Pre-Shared Key is the password you use to gain access to your network. This should be a strong password of at lest 14-20 characters in length with a mix of symbols, numbers, and letters. To learn more about this subject, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
  • Click the Save Settings button and you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
