How to Reset the Dlink DIR-615

This page covers how to reset the Dlink DIR-615v5 router back to it's original factory defaults. It's important that you know this is not the same thing as a reboot.

When I use the term reboot I am referring to a cycle in the power to the device. When I use the term reset I am referring to a complete factory restore. This means every single setting you have ever changed is reverted back to factory defaults.

Warning: Resetting a router is a big step in solving a router issue. We recommend making a list of all settings you have made changes to in the past. Consider the following:

  • The router's main username and password are reverted back to factory defaults.
  • The Internet username and password are also reverted back to factory defaults.
  • If you use a DSL connection you need to re-enter the ISP username and password. You need to call your Internet Service Provider for these details.
  • If you have made any other changes to this router you should write them down so you can reconfigure them later on.

Take the end of a paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds while the router is on. This begins the reset process which can take upwards of a minute to complete.

Warning: If you don't hold down the reset button for long enough you only reboot the system instead of resetting it.

Remember a reset erases every single setting you have ever changed on your router. If you want to try and avoid this loss you should exhaust other troubleshooting options first.

Login to the Dlink DIR-615

Once you've reset the Dlink DIR-615v5 router you should log into it. This is done by using the factory default username and password. We have provided these for you in our Login Guide.

Change Your Password

Following that you should set a new password for your router. Keep in mind that this password only protects your router settings, not your wireless network. Still, setting a strong password is always a good decision. For more help be sure to check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Tip: Avoid losing your new password by writing it on a note and attaching it to the underside of your router.
