Setup WiFi on the Linksys WRT54GS

The Linksys WRT54GS router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Linksys WRT54GS

Find the WiFi Settings on the Linksys WRT54GS

This guide starts on the Basic Setup page of the Linksys WRT54GS router. To configure the WiFi settings click the link at the top of the page labeled Wireless.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Linksys WRT54GS

This takes you to a page like the one you see here. First, use the Wireless Network Name (SSID) to create a new name for your network. It really doesn't matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Learn more in our guide titled How to Change your Wireless Name.

Use the drop down list titled Wireless Channel to choose from the channels 1,6, and 11. Learn why you should only use these three channels in our WiFi Channels Guide.

Leave the green button alone. This is the SES or WPS and is not very secure. Learn more about this in our What is WPS Guide.

When you are finished with this page, click the Save Settings button. Then go back to the top of the page and click the link titled Wireless Security.

This brings you to the page you see here. The first setting is titled Security Mode. Set this to WPA2 Personal for maximum security. Learn more in our WEP vs. WPA guide.

Next set the WPA Algorithm to AES.

Finally you need to change the WPA Shared Key. This is the password you use to gain access to your network. We recommend creating a strong password of at least 14-20 characters. We have more password tips for you in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's it, just click the Save Settings button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
