Setup WiFi on the Netgear WGR614

The Netgear WGR614 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Netgear WGR614

The Netgear WGR614v2 DMZ guide begins on the Router Status page. From here, click the option in the left sidebar labeled Wireless Settings under the heading of Setup.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WGR614

This takes you to the page you see here. The first thing that needs to be changed is the Name (SSID). This is the network ID and should be something you create. It isn't important what you enter here but we recommend that you avoid personal information. Please read our Guide on what the SSID is..

The second setting that needs to be checked is titled the Channel. All you need to do here is make sure you are using channels 1,6, or 11. Find out why in our guide found clicking this link.

The next setting is the Security Options. This particular router version does not have WPA2-PSK. This is the only option we recommend. Find out more about this topic in our WEP vs. WPA Guide. We highly recommend updating your firmware to allow for the newer and more secure option of WPA2-PSK.

Once you have upgraded and chosen WPA2-PSK, you need to enter a good Passphrase. This is the password you use to access your network. Create a strong password of at least 14-20 characters. Use some symbols, numbers, and letters in your new password also. For more ideas in strengthening your password, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's all you need to do, just click the Apply button when you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
