Setup WiFi on the Netgear WGR614

The Netgear WGR614 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Encryption

Login To The Netgear WGR614

To get started configuring the Netgear WGR614 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Let's begin on the Router Status page of the Netgear WGR614v6. To setup the WiFi correctly, click the option in the left sidebar labeled Wireless Settings under the heading of Setup.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WGR614

This takes you to a page that should look like the one you see above. The first box on this page is titled Name (SSID). This is the name you create for your network and should be unique to you. It doesn't matter what you enter here but we suggest avoiding personal information. Check out our Wireless Names Guide for more info.

Go to the drop down box labeled Channel and see if you are using the correct channel. Everyone should use channels 1,6, or 11. Find out why in our WiFi Channels Guide.

Now go to the Security Options section and choose the appropriate security type for your network. Due to the technology growth, we recommend that home networks go with the security option of WPA2-PSK. Unfortunately this router version doesn't have this option. We strongly recommend that you update your firmware version to allow for this. Check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA for more information.

Once this is done you need to enter a Passphrase. This is the network password and it needs to be strong. Check out our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password Guide for ideas on how to do this.

That's it, just click the Apply button and you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
