Setup WiFi on the Netgear WGR614

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Click the option in the left sidebar labeled Wireless Settings under Setup.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WGR614

You are now on the correct page to make all the necessary changes to your WiFi.

  • Change the Name (SSID) to something you created. It doesn't matter what you choose here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Take a look at our How to Change your Wireless Name.
  • Check to see what Channel you are using. Use channels 1,6, or 11. Find out why in our WiFi Channels Guide.
  • Below that is the Security Options. It is strongly recommended that you use the most secure option of WPA2-PSK[AES]. To learn what the differences are in the security options, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.
  • The Passphrase is the final setting that needs to be changed. It is important that this password be strong. This password is the key to your network and if you have a weak password it can be cracked easily no matter how good your security is. We recommend using a minimum of 14-20 characters and at least one number, symbol, and capital letter. Read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide for more help in this.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
