Setup WiFi on the Netgear WGR614

The Netgear WGR614 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

This guide begins on the Router Status page of the Netgear WGR614v4. To get to the WiFi page, click the option in the left sidebar labeled Wireless Settings, under Setup.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WGR614

This directs you to the page you see here. There are several settings on this page that need your attention. The first of these is titled Name (SSID). This is the name you give your network for identification. It doesn't really matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. The next setting is entitled Channel. This is the channel in which your wireless network is transmitted over the airways. There are three channels that should be used by everyone. Be sure you are using channels 1,6, or 11. To learn why read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Below that is the Security Options. Due to the quick growth of technology we highly recommend using the most secure version of security, WPA2-PSK. This router version does not allow for this option. We highly recommend updating your firmware to allow for it before continuing. Read our WEP vs. WPA Guide for further information.

After you have made this change, you need to enter a strong Passphrase. This is the password you use to access your internet. It is just as important to have a strong password as a security system. A potential hacker has the key to the security if they can crack your password. Read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide for great ideas in creating a very strong and memorable password. We recommend a minimum of 14-20 characters with at least one number, symbol, and capital letter mixed in.

That's it, your WiFi is now more secure. Before you exit be sure to click the Apply button in order to save these changes.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
