There are two things on this page that need to be changed.

  • Wireless Channel - Use this drop down list to choose channel 1,6, or 11. There is only room in the spectrum for up to three channels that don't overlap. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. Sharing a channel does not. Check out our guide, WiFi channels for a full explanation of why you should only use one of these three channels.
  • SSID - This is the name you give your wireless network. Your name you enter here should not contain anything personal. Check out our guide titled Wireless names.

When you are finished making these changes, tick the blue button labeled Apply Changes. Then, on the left side of the page, click the link titled Security.

You should now be on a page like the one you see here.

  • Security Mode - There are several different choices in this drop down list. Choose the strongest one of WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK). For more information on this topic, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.
  • Authentication - This is just narrowing down your choice above. The best choice is WPA2-PSK.
  • Encryption Technique - There are two choices available here, TKIP and AES. We recommend using AES. This is the newest and strongest encryption available.
  • Pre-Shared Key(PSK) - This is the password you use to access your network. It is also used in the encryption technique, so you need to create a strong password that can't easily be cracked by a program or by guessing. Create a password of at least 20 characters. Avoid using personal information as this can easily be guessed. Don't use any real words that can be found in a dictionary as these can be cracked by programs very quickly. This password should look random with some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. We have created a guide that can help you come up with a strong password that is memorable, Choosing a strong password.

When you have finished these things, click the Apply Changes button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
